Judging process

• Each initiative will be reviewed by a panel of high-level oncology experts, comprised of secondary care clinicians, public health professionals, GPs, cancer managers and industry and patient representatives
• Entries will be shortlisted by the judging panel and shortlisted entrants will be notified by e-mail
• Judges will select the category winners from this shortlist
• The judges’ decision is final and we regret that individual feedback cannot be given
• Shortlisted entrants will be invited to hear the winners announced at the Quality in Care Excellence in Oncology Awards ceremony and dinner on Tuesday November 6, 2012, at The Hilton, Liverpool, during the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) annual conference.

What are the judges looking for?

The judges will be looking for evidence that your initiative has made a significant difference to existing practice, to patient outcomes and, where appropriate, a contribution to the goals of your organisation. The most important aspects to make clear in your entry are:
• An overall assessment of the environment at the outset of the project
• Clear objectives
• Details of implementation
• Measurable outcomes
• Ambition
• Innovative thinking
• Evidence of strong, positive leadership and team working
• Patient engagement.

Judges will be looking for improved outcomes or measures of success in the following areas, though they may not be explicitly stated in each and every category:
- Quality of care
- Patient outcomes
- Patient experience
- Patient satisfaction
- Overall health in wellbeing
- Self-care
- Partnership working where applicable
- Disease awareness and prevention where applicable.

Check the criteria listed underneath all categories for additional information to consider when writing your entry.

What happens next?

At the Awards presentation the top three finalists in each category will be presented with an award in recognition of their initiative. After the Awards ceremony all finalists will be invited to present their work and share the steps taken to deliver their prize-winning initiative at dedicated regional events to be held throughout 2013.

Sharing best practice

The winning entries will also be featured in ‘QiC Connect’, an online resource providing practical ideas and advice on how healthcare providers can improve service provision and patient outcomes. QiC Connect will comprise case studies outlining the challenges faced by finalists, the solutions they devised and the results they achieved.

Visitors to QiC Connect will have the opportunity to read about and learn from these initiatives that have already been implemented and recognised for their ability to improve patient care.
