A new formula for better management of type 1 diabetes
by The Paediatric Diabetes Home Care Team, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
Intensive blood glucose control significantly reduces the risk of morbidity and mortality even with small decreases in the HbA1c. However, the formulae to help achieve control were developed at a time when patients only had the option of a rigid insulin regimen. The team developed a new formula which takes into account the role of flexible insulin to indicate the amount of glucose needed to raise the blood sugar by 1mmol/L. This formula has proved to be helpful in balancing and adjusting blood glucose regulation for patients.
Judges comment:
"We know many patients that struggle with their condition and we would definitely want to give this idea a go. It was a logical solution and we haven't seen this sort of project presented before."
